Ongoing Projects
Zambian IBA Conservation and Education Programme
Zambia's
IBA programme is in full swing, with the simultaneous launch of Pete
Leonard's book, Important Bird Areas in Zambia and of ZOS's IBA
programme in August 2005. Through funding from NORAD and the support of
NOF (the Norwegian Ornithological Society) ZOS has employed a full time
IBA coordinator, to provide support to IBA schools and, with the help
of ZOS members, to produce Current Status Reports for the first 12 of
42 IBAs.
Zambia Bird Atlas Project
A mammoth project started in the 1970s which aims to map the distribution of all the species that occur in Zambia.
Please help ZOS by sending lists of species you've seen from anywhere in the country. You can also load your sightings onto the WorldBirds website for Zambia.
Join other ZOS members counting waterbirds every January and July for
the global surveys co-ordinated by Wetlands International.
Zambian Ringing Scheme
Bird ringers have been operating in Zambia since the 1940s and there is much potential for bird ringing studies in Zambia.
Over 60,000 birds have been ringed in Zambia to date. Contact: lizanneroxburgh@yahoo.com for more information on ringing in Zambia.
Maintenance of Records
Species Status Reports
ZOS analyses and monitors the status of birds in Zambia from both an
ornithological point of view and in terms of their conservation needs.
Nesting records
A nest record card scheme has been in operation for many years and you
are invited to contribute and breeding data that you collect. Nest
record cards are available from the scheme's co-ordinator.
National Parks Bird Lists
ZOS keeps the official checklists for all the Zambian National Parks and these are available on request.
Site Lists
ZOS also keeps checklists for all Zambia's Important Bird Areas as well
as a number of other frequently visited sites around the country. These
are available on request.
