Books
'A Field Guide to Zambian Birds not found in Southern Africa' by Dylan Aspinwall and Carl Beel was published in 1998.
It has colour plates by Gabriel Ellison of the 100+ species on the Zambian list not known from south of the Zambezi (ie birds not in Roberts).
There are also distribution maps and texts and an annotated Zambian checklist packed with useful information about all the species found in Zambia.
'Common Birds of Zambia' was first published by ZOS in 1990. It is a beginners guide and covers just over 100 of the most commonly encountered Zambian birds.
It has a comprehensive introduction to birds and birding in Zambia and there are colour illustrations by Gabriel Ellison.
'Important Bird Areas in Zambia' by Peter Leonard.
This book is a contribution to identifying Zambia's biodiversity conservation priorities.
It describes in detail 42 sites in Zambia that meet the criteria for Important Bird Areas (IBAs) -
places of global significance for bird and biodiversity conservation.
This book will interest environmental planners, policy makers, wildlife managers, students and researchers.
It will also be an essential source of information for birdwatchers wanting to locate Zambia's special birds.
Available from the NHBS in the UK or from the ZOS office in Chindo Road.
NEW!! 'The Birds of Zambia. An Atlas and Handbook.' by RJ Dowsett, DR Aspinwall, and F Dowsett-Lemaire. Published by Tauraco Press.
The long awaited atlas has finally been published. An essential companion to any field guide, full of useful information on where and when to see birds.
It also contains a history of Zambian ornithology, a description of the biogeography, habitats and conservation issues, and data on ringing recoveries.
Available from the NHBS in the UK or from the ZOS office in Chindo Road.
Field Checklist
ZOS maintains the official Zambian bird list and this is published on a small field record card available from ZOS and several retail outlets around the coutry.
The card is regularly updated and it is the ideal way in which to record your field observations.
ZOS welcomes your observations submitted on these cards.
Occasional Papers
ZOS has produced several other publications in the form of occasional papers and details of these can be found in the newsletter as and when they are published.
IBA current status reports
ZOS is in the process of producing current status reports for the important birds areas in Zambia.
The first current status report was produced for Mutinondo Wilderness IBA. We have also produced current
status reports for Imanda Forest, Batoka Gorges, Chisamba, Chimfunshi, Mutulanganga and Wonder Gorge IBAs.
